Bookmakers are legal and they are very close to us. Next to our favorite restaurant, the supermarket we go to almost every day, the square where teenagers meet after school... They are another element that we have normalized and that curiously rises as the new leisure center for the younger population.
Psychologists define these places as the heroin of the 21st century. Their proliferation in recent years is giving way to an increasingly worrying phenomenon that is not talked about enough. And this fact tells us everything: according to the Spanish Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers (FEJAR), the population with the highest rate of gambling addiction is between 14 and 21 years of age.
In this type of games, betting by minors is not allowed, but if there is something really easy, it is betting. Many resort to older friends, while others find no problem at all when entering these centers.
There are also online gambling houses, a universe without filters, without protection barriers in which many children and teenagers enter at an early age, attracted by the sports theme or by the attractiveness of the design of the game itself.
As striking as it may seem to us, young people are the target of a large part of these large gambling companies. For them, it is a form of leisure and also a way of earning income. But the consequences are devastating.

Their colorful facades and the fact that they are meeting places where you can drink, smoke... and make bets of a few euros. The profile of the gambler has changed in recent years, if not so long ago it was that of a 35 year old man with a job who started playing slot machines at around 18 years of age, now it has changed quite a lot.
We have kids between 18 years old or younger, from working class neighborhoods that start in gambling houses and online games. The causes for which they end up deriving in gambling addiction behaviors, respond to very specific factors. They are the following.

Some come out of curiosity and most of them are brought there by their classmates.
The managers of these places point out that they are nothing more than "recreational spaces". However, few realize the drama that unfolds as soon as one gets used to spending time there.
Gambling addiction arrives unnoticed. It is a form of addiction that breaks lives and breaks family units.

On the other hand, although it is true that online games have increased a lot in recent years, the effects of pathological gambling are most visible in betting shops.
We cannot forget that these centers are oriented only to keep the client from consuming and leaving the money in the machines or betting. In these houses, there are no windows, no clocks and no nooks and crannies through which light can enter. The goal is simple, to make customers lose track of time.
Gambling addicts are getting younger and youngerAs we pointed out at the beginning, gambling addiction is already appearing among the younger population, often even among minors. The vast majority of them come to therapy not because they are aware that they have a problem: they do so under pressure from their families.
We also find college students involved in serious economic problems, in kids who started gambling at 14 or 15 online using the identity of their parents.
It should not be forgotten that gambling is made to create addiction. That is the real purpose. Gambling houses are not recreational centers where you can socialize or have a few drinks. They are places to create addicts en masse and only awareness and tougher regulation can solve the invisible dramas that take place in our society. Let's keep this in mind.
